We use it for our wagons, because it is stronger and thicker than most other materials, improving insulation. The ribbed exterior causes water runoff and prevents pooling, rusting, and leaks. It also allows our spray foam insulation a solid surface to adhere to providing a very solid structure tying the 3 components together Roofing, aluminum frame, Insulation which provides a monolithic type structure giving the wagon exceptional strength.

That one is sweet. I could live in there just fine. Goes deep down into my roots. I saw it rolling down the road one time a while back as I was wondering about. Hoping for family gathering. Notify me of follow-up comments by email.

Thank you! Cute design. I need to see more of the inside. Like the front, although I would shorten it a little bit and add a longer frame to do more with the inside.
I like that one. Looks like it is kind of heavy though. Still nice job of woodworking and crafting. The shutters are nice also. So this model is specifically intended so you can pull it with a regular SUV or even a compact car. They also make Tiny Houses upon request and they have other interesting designs, but yeah, they seem to specialize in the wood work, at least on the interior as can be glimpsed with the intricate work they did for that ceiling….
Though, it can get heavier depending on what you put into it… The space below the bed is all storage, the table actually slides out from the bed and the bench seats also open up to give storage, the one on the left is where the porta potti is stored, add the kitchen with the cabinets and the patio deck benches also open up for even more storage…. I had previously built an award winning tiny home Tinyhouseinthecountry. I needed a new construction challenge. The first tiny house was built super heavy and I have not moved it much.
That's ok, since it was never the intent to do so. What I was looking to do now is build a much lighter, more versatile and portable gypsy wagon where no special vehicle would be needed to tow it.
My goal in doing this was sell it and to be a model and proof of concept for the format. I also wanted to share the experience and create the Instructable you are viewing right now. It is my way of returning the favor since it was actually jaylabrosse who with his really great gypsy wagon Intstructable inspired me to want to create something similar. I was ultimately looking to incorporate my own style and really create a special custom RV that someone will explore this great country in or simply enjoy just as much sitting in their back yard.
If you think that it takes some kind of construction background, special skills, or innate talent to build one of these Be smart. Be practical. Watch a lot of YouTube videos. The information is out there. I'm documenting my build process here. I seek to outline my various steps pretty extensively figuring that more information is better than less. Find your own construction process and bring in experts where and when needed. Be safe and be meticulous.
You can do this. I did. From scratch. No real plan. Just start working. Note: The first dozen steps are really all you'll need to create a highly customizable shell. All further steps are what I did to design and complete this as a luxurious small camper caravan and are purely discretionary.
Final weight on this was right around lbs. Did you use this instructable in your classroom? Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. Every house needs a foundation. Tiny houses on wheels are no different.
Instead of pouring concrete though, you simply need a trailer.I am posting an instructional and photographic journal documenting my progress as I build a gypsy wagon.
Often I build from a collection of pictures or sketches that have attracted my interest. Detailed plans are rarely used or required, as I design as I build.
GYPSY WAGON VARDO (2018)
Pictures are posted below. It was fun to build, modify and make a few changes as the teardrop came together. It turned out that it was easy to tow and a great way to meet other outdoor craftsmen, camping enthusiasts and people who enjoy a simpler and somewhat old fashioned wheeled camping adventure. There was something about it and the dozens of vardo pictures I discovered online that held my fascination as a woodworker and wood artist.
It was rustic art on wheels. Unlike my beat-up discovery down the road, I understand that historically, gypsy wagons, caravans or vardos were four-wheeled horse drawn living wagons. They were often intricately carved and vividly decorated. When I first saw one front up and right there, a few months ago, I was amazed at the detail and artistry that the builder had put into her wagon creation. Wow there was a backyard project. It had all the elements. Perhaps this one. I think I like the Reading and Ledge style the best.
Time to check out what others have done and start scouring kijiji for a frame. Besides it would be easier to move around both while building and later when positioning at a campsite. The instructable is located here. Here is a copy of my first drawing of my planned vardo, which of course I pretty well ignored, adapting and making changes as I went.
Using Kijiji, I located a well used but solid utility trailer with a heavy duty frame, axle and tongue jack that met my requirements. And it was cheap. I began construction in late April. By the way, it would be great to meet other local gypsy wagon builders. Feel free to contact me. Thank you for the delightful conversation in the rain while I admired your steampunk teardrop. Like Like. Love your Vardo!
I will build one someday! Thank you Lori. I have not weighed it at the scales, but I would think it is around lbs max. If it remains on your property or tow it only a couple of miles on flat ground you would probably be okay. Or you could have someone move it for you. And yes, people will think you are crazy but be envious none the less. Here is a link to my instructable site showing the build as a series of steps.
Thanks for the great photos. Rob, Thanks for the compliment. The vardo was built without any plans and no drawings … just visualizations.
Not the sorta thing a shop teacher wants to hear but I build freehand all the time.
