I did work in a tool and die shop for a little bit. Always enjoyed working on anything metal so I decided to start a little machine shop at home. Unfortunately after I got it home I realized that there is hardly any information about these lathes and not much in the way of parts. As far as I know the only part I am missing is the 1 larger belt guard.
All the manuals I was able to find either have the bottom of the pages missing or is in a different language. So if anyone has one of these machines or has any information that would be great. I do have a beautiful sales brochure with poster that I could scan if anyone is interested. I plan on tearing apart the lathe over time and cleaning it up and painting it with Hammerite and having the stand sand blasted and painting it as well.
My first set of questions is, what do you guys use for degreasing and cleaning your machines. There is a bit of surface rust on the ways under the chuck, what would you guys recommend for cleaning this or should I send the ways off to be ground?
Thanks, Jeff. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. Repeat several times,do not use sandpaper etc.!! You now have a real lathe so you can get rid of your old toys. Try lathes. I own a Maximat VP mentor and belong to it. Tony has a copy of the Instruction Book and the Parts List for these machines. He is easy to deal with. Check it out. My brother has a similar machine complete with the vertical setup.
Is that a 8" 3-Jaw on the spindle? The 3-Jaw on the floor is probably a 5" and the 4-Jaw is probably a 6".
The Home Machinist!
Lots of rust. Take it slow and easy and you will have a very nice machine. The original paint was a very nice silver blue metallic hammer tone. You may have to overhaul the motor Not cheap but doable.
These were very well built. My brother's which was my father's before that was made in I don't know anything about your lathe but it looks like you got a helluva deal. It seems like a lathe you can do some real work on.
Maximat 7 should I consider for a first lathe?
I'd easily pay what you paid just for the drill bits alone. I've also had little success with the Yahoo groups, maybe through my reluctance to join. You can probably find a steady rest from a smaller lathe and make an adapter plate for it.

Emco Maximat Super 11 Lathe I would be interested to hear what people think about this lathe. I've been looking at South Bends - trying to find a Heavy 10, and saw this machine.
Are they worlds apart? I owned a Super11 for a number of years. It is a very good, light lathe. It is not a medium lathe. That would more likely be the 13" bigger brother. Mine came fully equipped and supported me for 5 or 6 years while I built up my business making apparatus for the sciences. I replaced it with a Harrison M which to me is a good medium weight lathe. I now have a Monarch EE! I can't think of anything bad about the Emco except it was a little too light for everyday use.
It's probably the best home shop lathe out there IMHO. I think the heavy 10 would out perform it thoughall things being equal. Parts would surely be easier to get for the SB. Good luck! Tim in D. Originally Posted by NYDave. I would be interested to hear what people think about this lathe.

Advice on Emco Maximat V10 -P. Thread starter Firewood Start date Sep 4, Tags advice emco maximat vp. Firewood Registered Registered. Joined Sep 4, Messages Hi there, this is my first post other than introduction. Right now there is an Emco Maximat Vp that just got posted for sale. I live in a place that never saw much along the lines of the metal industry so machinery is few and far between.
I'm looking for some guidance on this machine or warnings if it is not a good machine to get into or start out with. What I have found out so far is: -There are fibre gears that are designed to be a sacrificial weak point that should be inspected I believe you have to unscrew a plate on the top?
Its hard to find good information on these machines, especially for someone who is green as grass to machinery. Its kind of at the far end of my price range especially because it doesn't include tooling.
If I could get some direction on what to look for to gauge its condition I would be very grateful! H-M Lifetime Diamond Member. Joined Dec 20, Messages 7, Firewood, I do not have, nor have I even seen a VP.
I do have an Emco Super 11 and have refurbished a Compact 8 and can say that they are superb machines. Before going further, let me link a "Handbook" from the Yahoo Emco Larger Lathes group that you should join if you buy this machine. This will give you an idea of how the lathe and milling attachment work. Emco always lists all the tooling available for that model of lathe so if they made it, you will find it in the manual.
Since Emco is totally committed to CNC nowadays, all support for their older manual machines is gone.Postage costs to be met by the customer and will not be refunded. Emco maximat V10 metal lathe, V, single phase, Emco maximat v10 metal lathe, v, single phase.A very well made, all-geared head lathe the Emco Maximat V13 was supplied with a hardened bed as standard.
The electrical controls were to a much higher industrial specification than the company's other offerings, with the motor switch controlled by a traditional and very safe "third-shaft" with the lever pivoting from the lower right-hand side of the apron within easy reach of the operator in any normal working position.
The lathe had a centre height of mm 6. The hole through the headstock spindle was 36 mm 1. The tailstock taper was 3 Morse taper and the barrel had a travel of mm 4". Totally enclosed with all-lever control, the screwcutting gearbox was ran in an oil bath and transmitted power to the feed shaft through a slipping clutch designed to prevent damage in the case of mishandling by the operator; Emco also claimed that this feature allowed turning up to a shoulder with automatic slip once reached.
In normal use the leadscrew, driven by a dog clutch, was used only for cutting threads and was otherwise left stationary. An optional changewheel set converted both metric and Imperial machines to translate the other's threads - and also allowed 28 module pitches from 0. Changewheel sets to extend threading ranges were also available and might have been supplied as part of the standard equipment for some markets.
For Imperial inch they comprised: 42t, 55t, 60t, 63t, 65t, 75t, 80t, 90t, 96t and t. For metric models the set was: 30t, 50t, 60t, 63t, 65t, 70t, 75t 95t, t and t. Especially well constructed, the cabinet stand was supplied as part of the standard equipment and came with a useful slide-out chip tray and a generously proportioned splash back. As an option, the well-known Emco 6-speed milling head with fine and quick-action drilling feeds could be mounted at the rear of the bed and came complete with a usefully-large T-slotted boring table; a special vice was available to make the most of this table and Emco also offered a well-thought-out range of other milling accessories.
This did not, of course, change the machine into a traditional and genuine toolroom lathe - for that it would have needed to weigh at least twice its stated kg and be of a very different design. Smooth-running Poly-V drive belt from the two-speed 1. The screwcutting gearbox was totally enclosed, ran in an oil bath and transmitted power to the feed shaft through a slipping clutch designed to prevent damage in the case of mishandling by the operator; Emco also claimed that this feature allowed turning up to a dead point.

Maximat 7 should I consider for a first lathe? Thread starter Subway Start date Aug 5, Subway Registered Registered. Joined Aug 5, Messages 3. I am considering buying a used Maximat 7 for my first lathe.
I had been thinking of buying a mini chinese lathe but thought it might be too small and cheap for small repairs to power equipment around the house. What does everyone think. Also had been looking at an Atlas Please give me advice. Richard King Registered Registered. Joined Jul 1, Messages 1, Subway said:. Like our site? Upgrade to Donating Member status and remove ads!
