This clock belonged to my wife's grandfather. I would to know the manufacture and instructions for winding and setting time. Does it have chimes? There looks to be a Fast slow setting on the back.

JTD Registered User. Sep 27, 7, Welcome to the board. You need to post some more photos of the back of the clock and the movement. One partial photo of the front is not really enough. I will do that. Thank you very much. Rockin Ronnie Registered User. The "chime" you mention is a strike. If it is a ships clock it would have "eight bells" designed to regulate a duty watch on a ship.

There is a bell or strike for each half hour of a 4 hour watch. We don't know if the clocks chimes or strikes at all, since the question asked was 'Does the clock have chimes? This is one of the reasons I asked if he could post photos. Here are a couple of more pictures, I'm not sure how much they will help. I am a little reluctant to take it apart at this point. Well, the pictures help a bit. As for winding and setting the hands, if you move the little knob on the lower left hand you can move it up and down in the little slot that will move the dust covers and reveal the winding arbor and also the arbor for setting the hands.

When you are done winding and setting, you move the knob back and the covers return to their closed position. To answer some of your questions, it seems to have been made in marked on the dialthe maker's name is very likely on the back plate of the movement and this clock does not have a strike.

On some of their clocks the word 'Chelsea' is on the dial, in small letters below the 6. As your photo is not square, I can't see if that is present or not. But your clock is virtually identical to other Chelsea clocks I have seen. These are very good quality clocks and worth looking after. Hope this helps. Looks like I use the key to turn the hands to set time.Time's up. Order today and stay in style and on time with U.

Navy - Eagle with Anchor Wall Clock.A marine chronometer is a timepiece that is precise and accurate enough to be used as a portable time standard ; it can therefore be used to determine longitude by means of accurately measuring the time of a known fixed location, for example Greenwich Mean Time GMT and the time at the current location.

When first developed in the 18th century, it was a major technical achievement, as accurate knowledge of the time over a long sea voyage is necessary for navigationlacking electronic or communications aids.

The first true chronometer was the life work of one man, John Harrisonspanning 31 years of persistent experimentation and testing that revolutionized naval and later aerial navigation and enabling the Age of Discovery and Colonialism to accelerate. To determine a position on the Earth's surface, it is necessary and sufficient to know the latitudelongitudeand altitude.

Altitude considerations can naturally be ignored for vessels operating at sea level. Until the mids, accurate navigation at sea out of sight of land was an unsolved problem due to the difficulty in calculating longitude. Navigators could determine their latitude by measuring the sun's angle at noon i.

To find their longitudehowever, they needed a time standard that would work aboard a ship. Observation of regular celestial motions, such as Galileo's method based on observing Jupiter's natural satelliteswas usually not possible at sea due to the ship's motion. The lunar distances methodinitially proposed by Johannes Werner inwas developed in parallel with the marine chronometer.

The Dutch scientist Gemma Frisius was the first to propose the use of a chronometer to determine longitude in The purpose of a chronometer is to measure accurately the time of a known fixed location, for example Greenwich Mean Time GMT.

This is particularly important for navigation. Knowing GMT at local noon allows a navigator to use the time difference between the ship's position and the Greenwich Meridian to determine the ship's longitude. In modern practice, a nautical almanac and trigonometric sight-reduction tables permit navigators to measure the SunMoonvisible planetsor any of 57 selected stars for navigation at any time that the horizon is visible.

The creation of a timepiece which would work reliably at sea was difficult. Until the 20th century, the best timekeepers were pendulum clocksbut both the rolling of a ship at sea and the up to 0. Christiaan Huygensfollowing his invention of the pendulum clock inmade the first attempt at a marine chronometer in in Franceunder the sponsorship of Jean-Baptiste Colbert.

He obtained a patent for his invention from Colbert, but his clock remained imprecise at sea. During Huygens and Hooke each delivered two such devices to Charles, but none worked well and neither Huygens nor Hooke received an English patent. It was during this work that Hooke formulated what is known as Hooke's Law.Join Our Mailing List. To the above left: Ship's Presentation Clock engraved C.
