Links Blog Facebook Twitter. This guide will outline exactly what exactly lies behind this mini edition computer and which impressive projects have already been brought to life with the Zero. The aim and background for developing the Raspberry Pi Zero was primarily the desire to use the minicomputer for projects which require making use of every last bit of space. To this end, the Raspberry Pi Zero, which weighs only 9 grams, has a reduced board width of 35mm.
All other models are almost twice as wide at 56mm. Furthermore, the Mini Edition is just 5mm high — compared to Raspberry 2 and 3 which have a height of 20mm, the Zero offers a lot more leeway.
In order to protect your privacy, the video will not load until you click on it. For a while it was also the leading first-generation device on storage memory, with available. The technical specifications of the Raspberry Pi Zero can be seen in tabular form below:. Demand for the Pi Zero was huge from the beginning, so the minicomputer was quickly sold out at numerous Raspberry dealers. The same thing happened with an issue of the magazine The MagPipublished at the same time, which featured a free version of the Mini Pi.
Since so many people could get their hands on one so quickly, it is no wonder that many new interesting projects are being created with the help of the Raspberry Pi Zero.
From practical, everyday helpers, to dronesto entertainment devicesit seems like amateur hobbyists have no limit to their creative imagination, as the following examples illustrate:. As if this idea was not crazy enough, the visual marvel is also accompanied musically by a MIDI file being played, which is located on the single board computer.
He reveals what software and hardware he used to create this masterpiece on his website :. A Spanish development team led by Victor Mayoral — co-founder of robotics startup Erle Robotics- has garnered interest on the online Hackster platform with his Raspberry Pi Pi0drone project.
It is a drone that can be controlled with a standard remote controlthanks to the Raspberry Pi Zero. The operating system is a Debian-based distribution that Erle Robotics has put together for this purpose. The Hackster project webpage does not just provide information about the project, but also gives instructions on how to construct one of these drones yourselfincluding a list of hardware and software required.
For some time now, however, Idein has not been testing the product on these devices, but rather on a composite of 16 Raspberry Pi Zeroes. Incidentally, due to delivery bottlenecks, the Japanese company relied on donations from other Pi owners to complete the cluster. We've almost finished creating PiZero cluster board.
But I wonder when we can buy remaining 15 PiZeros. PiZero pic. The young man from England provides numerous tutorials on using the microcomputer on his YouTube channel and made developing the power-driven skateboard his summer holiday projectachieving a remarkable result.
Equipped with a single motor amp, 2. To accelerate or slow down the skateboard, you use an ordinary Nintendo Wii controller. For a complete list of the components used, see GitHub.
To do this, the two have installed the Raspberry Pi Zero as a central component to regulate a peristaltic pump 12 volts and an LED plant light 5 voltswhich supply the plants with water and artificial sunlight. At Hackster. InNintendo released the Game Boyone of the most successful portable game consoles of all time — until it was replaced by the color-coded Game Boy Color Nearly million copies of the console have been sold.
For more than a quarter of a century, Game Boy rewrote gaming history and dominated the market with games like Tetris or Super Mario. The console runs on the operating system RetroPie, a distribution that contains emulators for different consoles, making it possible to play other classic games including SNES, NES that only need to be downloaded as ROM. Wermy documented his development steps and published them on Imgur on April 6 th The crucial main component: A Raspberry Pi Zero.Written by Adrian Sanabria-Diaz on 30 July Posted in Bit on Bytes.
The purpose of this article is to get you started with the initial setup of RetroPie on the Raspberry Pi Zero. What's awesome about this project is that anybody can jump right in and do it since there's literally no previous coding knowledge necessary.
The setup was a lot easier on the Raspberry Pi 3 and RetroPie does run faster on it but I wanted to write a quick tutorial for the Zero since there were a few more steps in setting it up due to the limited USB ports.
Best Raspberry Pi distros in 2020
I'm assuming you already know this but these boards are hard to find although I was able to snag one from Adafruit's website. Be sure to checkout RetroPie's official website and GitHub site. It builds upon Raspbian, EmulationStation, RetroArch and many other projects to enable you to play your favourite Arcade, home-console, and classic PC games with the minimum set-up.
For power users it also provides a large variety of configuration tools to customise the system as you want. RetroPie sits on top of a full OS, you can install it on an existing Raspbian, or start with the RetroPie image and add additional software later. It's up to you. Alright let's get started. First things first, head on over to Adafruit's website and snag yourself a Raspberry Pi zero. They're most likely out but be persistent.
They are out there. Note that the far left USB port is the power one. You'll notice that as soon as you plug in the power cable, the Raspberry Pi Zero will turn on. Unfortunately, unless you setup something with the GPIO pins the holes on the Pi that can accept input or output and be manipulated with something like Python the only way to turn the Pi on and off is to unplug and plug that power cable. Once completed, you're going to want to start loading this baby up with your games. I won't ask where you got them and please don't ask where I got mine.Believe it or not, the Raspberry Pi is now seven years old.
In its relatively short life the Pi has ushered in a new revolution in computing that stretches far beyond its original remit which was to promote basic computer science education in schools.
There have been several fresh Pi developments over the past few years. It also benefits from faster wireless and wired network connectivity than its predecessor. There are a number of Linux kernel-based operating systems designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi. These include fully featured distros such as Raspbian, which offers a fully functional desktop environment and is based on Debian, as well as speciality distros like RetroPie, which supports a large number of controllers and is aimed at gaming fans.
In this article, we're going to look at five of the most popular and distinct Raspberry Pi distros. Raspbian is one of the oldest and most popular mainstream distros for the Raspberry Pi.
The latest version is based on the ARM port of the Debian Stretch desktop distro, which improves performance under the hood as well as providing newer applications compared to the previous Jessie-based release. For installation, you'll need a microSD card with a minimum size of 8GB.
On first boot you'll be taken to the lightweight and elegant Pixel desktop environment. You can also choose from thousands of additional programs such as the LibreOffice suite or IceDove, all of which can be installed using Raspbian's built-in package manager.
A minimal version of Raspbian without a desktop — Raspbian Stretch Lite — is also available. The distro is based on the Mopidy music streaming server that can fetch music from various streaming services including Spotify, Google Play Music, and SoundCloud, as well as a host of online radio stations.
Furthermore, you can configure the distro to fetch music by automatically mounting shared folders on the network. Pi Music Box also supports a good many USB audio devices so you can connect external speakers if you wish. The most recent version 0.Top 3 Raspberry Pi Zero Emulation Images 4,000+ NES, FBA, MAME
If you're a fan of classic games, grab a copy of the RetroPie distro and transfer it to your SD card. On first boot, Retropie loads the Emulation Station software which helps you set up the controller and then lets you select a game from any of the supported emulators. The only caveat is that you must get your own ROMs. The Internet Archive also has many ROMs which are free to download — although be sure to check this is legal in your jurisdiction before going ahead.
One of the most popular uses for a Raspberry Pi is as a dedicated smart TV box, sitting underneath your big-screen TV to give you access to all kinds of digital media, whether stored locally or hosted online such as catch-up TV. Boot up, add your own media to its libraries and install the add-ons you want to add smart TV functionality. The media centre also incorporates a 'scraper' to download useful metadata about films and TV shows. You can also pair it with the Kodi remote app for your Android, iOS or Windows phone for the perfect media centre experience.
Once it's up and running, you can configure and manage the distro remotely using its browser-based admin interface. Any USB devices you attach will be detected automatically and you can also manually add your network storage. For the best performance make sure you use self-powered removable disks.
The distro has many options to manage other advanced aspects of a NAS too. TechRadar pro IT insights for business.

Raspberry Pi Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for users and developers of hardware and software for Raspberry Pi. It only takes a minute to sign up.
I know of the distributions listed on their sites of course, but it could be beneficial to have a complete list of everything known to work broken down by OS, and then distribution. The OS distributions that are available as an SD card image are marked with.
Non pi-specific images not having a dedicated SD card image is a clue to this will probably at a minimum require you install the Raspberry Pi kernel; a generic ARM kernel will not work.
See here for an example methodology regarding this. This is a comprehensive list of OS available for the Raspberry Pi. The official site links to this eLinux wikiso I presume this might be the most complete list at the moment. No list is complete without PiBang.
Simple instructions can be found in PiBang pi! Linux first look. Daylight linux is available for Raspberry pi 3. You can test it here : Daylight Linux. SARPi is not an operating system. Nor a clone, or a modification, or a hack, of Slackware ARM. Very user friendly especially to get children coding although I still prefer Raspian stretch for its programming ability.

We might want to define what "work" means. I'm taking "work" to mean "it boots". It may eventually be useful to differentiate operating systems that have full hardware support from those that boot, but remain rough around the edges.
Maybe we should split the list below into several, representing different stages of 'working'? Active Oldest Votes.
Alpine Linuxno SD card image but only require to extract tarball in the FAT32 partition ; works using multiple disk modes"disk less" by default on RPi Android emteria. Originally RTandroid. Commercial use only. Installation is done from tarballs now with manual setup of partitions and file systems, see here.
Does not seem to be actively maintained. Last version from works on Pi 1. The link should be kept though, so we can see the latest update I'm sure more will be added. We can also investigate the more exotic ones. Also, it would be good practice if people edited this answer when new distributions become available rather than adding new answers, that way everything is kept together and the list doesn't get effectively ordered by popularity on Raspberry Pi Stack Exchange.
