Version 1. Read about the new features and fixes from September. Update 1. If you'd like to read these release notes online, go to Updates on code.

This milestone we again received helpful feedback from our community, which let us identify and tackle many accessibility issues. For several iterations, we have announced progress on making our layout more flexible. With this release, that set of features are now ready for general use. Below is an overview of these features. Perhaps you would prefer a view from the Side Bar to be located in the Panel or vice versa. To do this, you can now drag a view by its header or an entire group by its icon or title from its current placement and move it to the desired location.

From the keyboard, the commands View: Move View workbench. Theme: GitHub Light. Earlier there was a setting for moving the Search view from the Side Bar to the Panel and now that setting is obsolete since drag and drop can be used instead. You might also want to group some views together that come from different extensions or you feel the default groups of built-in views aren't quite right for you.

You can both move views into existing groups or create new groups for a select set of views. This works across the Side Bar and Panel just as before. Below are a couple of examples of this. Views and groups of views can be reset to their default locations via their context menus.

When a view has been moved from its default location, there will be an entry Reset Location to move it back to its home. When views are moved around the workbench, they sometimes need to be presented differently, either with an icon or extra context if they aren't in their default location. When contributing a view, authors may now provide an icon property and a contextualTitle. If not provided, these will default to the icon and title of the view container to which they are contributed.

Lastly, extension authors can now start contributing view containers directly to the panel as opposed to activitybar as outlined in the Tree view extension guide. You can now pin tabs either from the context menu or using the new command workbench. Pinned tabs visually shrink to the size of an icon or will show the first letter of the filename if icons are disabled to save space.

If you want to see the dirty indicator with pinned tabs, you can set workbench. Note: We are still thinking about other ways to present pinned tabs.

If you have an opinion, feel free to share your ideas in the existing issues for showing a secondary tab bar or having a setting to show more context for pinned tabs. There are several new options for configuring how Search Editors are created:.

Please upvote this issue if you need support for aarch I'd like to support this one. There are more and more aarch64 boards out there which run Desktop GUIs. I bet there are more than 25 people desperately want this including myself, but nobody knows a feature request is posted here.

We realize that only a small fraction of users will upvote, e. These days I was working on jetson tx2 board and using vscode to program. So the support of arm64 is also very helpful to me. Just wanted to voice my upvote for this as well. I wouldn't mind trying to build the binaries for ARM64 myself. That's a pity. It's great that Microsoft have made VS code open source, but in this case without the source code it means we don't have the option of e. While the x64 mode works mostly, it e.

Needed to support government work, which I know is sometimes an oxymoron We built a vsix that just uses our ARM binaries and it works for us when we test on the bit aarch64 Raspberry Pi 4 OS -- does that seem okay or does anyone know if there's a problem that could cause it to not work in some scenarios?

We could possibly release that tomorrow if anyone wants to try it earlier. Our thought was that would be undesirable anyway in most cases, and on Windows we only publish a bit binary so that it crashes from out of memory instead of using all the memory on the machine in cases where a rare infinite memory "leak" bug is hit. Let us know if anyone encounters any issues with that particularly since the language service binaries were compiled for bit armhf and not aarch One known issue is libtinfo5 needs to be installed for clang-format to run However, I pressed F5 and it seems to be debugging normally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the debugger is armspecific already. Note that not all AArch64 kernels will include the compat layer necessary to run bit Arm binaries - I know my usual distro doesn't enable it.

Cavium ThunderXso ultimately you will want a proper native AArch64 build. Launching cpptools from 0. If I try invoking it directly with the platform ld-linux, then it of course fails for the expected reason.

And there's no bit userland on this platform, so I can't just invoke the proper ld-linux. Good news is we got our aarch64 build fixed, so we should be able to publish a new vsix some time next week.GitHub is home to over 50 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

Electron would have to support ARM binaries on Windows first, which it currently does not. As I know, electron started to support windows 10 on arm64 in stable version.

Is there an official support of vs code? I tracked down their booth and asked them about it at Ignite, they would not give a timeline but basically said that the primary blocker at this point is having the man hours to run the testing to make sure that it works as expected with all of the third party extensions.

Sure having ARM64 might make current extensions incompatible, but we need native VSCode to kick start native extension development isn't it? People can always install both x86 and ARM64 vscode if they have to. Just Checking on this, purchased a surface pro X and super excited about vscode on this device but would rather have ARM64 than x However as with a potential ARM64 Windows frontend, not all extensions work yet. How are you testing an arm 64 windows front end? I can use a terminal based workflow if I can use vscode Win Arm Teach me.

Surface Pro X, it's pretty great actually. The major hurdle is just the software side, but otherwise it's very good. But I've heard some folks have had success manually building the frontend for ARM64? What Electron do is they run the Azure DevOps device runner in x86 mode - seems to work fine for them and they use that to test the ARM64 binary.

I have a machine. If you have a test suite you'd want me to run I think I could do that too, if you don't have special environment requirements.Oh no, you're thinking, yet another cookie pop-up. Nightly builds starting today for Windows 10 on ARM, including background updates!

It has been a while coming: way back init was demanded by programmers as machinery running Windows on Arm hardware began trickling into the market. However, since Visual Studio Code depends on the Electron framework, support was not forthcoming until the platform itself played nicely with Windows on Arm.

As rolled around, Electron 7. Microsoft's crack at showing hardware makers what it actually meant when it said Windows on Arm cropped up as the Surface Pro X shortly after. Sadly for those developers who took the plunge with the Windows giant's new shiny, native Arm applications from Microsoft were somewhat thin on the ground.

Even its own Chromium-based browser was notable by its absence and those wishing to get their kicks in the popular VS Code were forced to use the sluggish x86 emulation mode of the OS. But of the beloved VS Code there remained no sign. The wait, for VS Code Insiders at least, appears to be over. The code required to add support was merged last month and, after a Surface Pro X was made available for testing, released overnight.

While there remains work left to do to persuade extension authors to port their wares and, being still in the Insider branch, the platform is not quite ready for production yet, the news will bring relief to those developers wondering if that pricey Surface Pro X was really worth all that precious cash. Well, here at Macworld we've donned our prognostication hats, investigated every rumour and trend we could find, all to bring you our predictions for 2018. Let's start with a really quick overview of what's happened in 2017. It's been busy, that's for sure.

In January, Apple released its first updates of the year, but these were software.

The company made big improvements to its music apps Garageband and Logic Pro X. Then, in March of 2017, Apple hosted an event to show off a few new products that it had been keeping up its sleeve:In June, at WWDC 2017, Apple had several major announcements to share with us.

As expected, Apple unveiled macOS High Sierra and iOS 11 (we share more information on those below), but more of a surprise were the following from the company:Apple also teased the launch of a new Mac Pro, which is expected in 2018. The updated Macs and iPads are available now, but we talk more about the all new iMac Pro and HomePod here, as well as the upcoming Mac Pro model.

Then on 12 September, in another special event we saw updates to the iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV, as well as final versions of iOS 11 and High Sierra. The star of the show, though, was undoubtedly the 10th anniversary iPhone X, with its brand-new virtually full-screen OLED design. Many had anticipated that Apple would upgrade the iPhone SE model to the iPhone SE2 or SEs in March 2017, replacing the existing (and rather popular) SE that was introduced in March 2016.

However the iPhone SE was only treated to a bump in storage to 32- and 128GB on 21 March. We do still expect a new iPhone SE model at some point in the future. When the new model launches it is likely to keep the existing, classic design, but feature upgraded internals such as the A10 chip found in the iPhone 7 and a more powerful camera.

To be honest we've got no idea what the follow up to the iPhone X is going to be called, but this guess is as good as any. We're not convinced this would be wise (the X already has the biggest screen Apple has ever put on a phone), but the market usually gets what the market wants.

We'd also love it if Touch ID could make a comeback in addition to Face ID. This would be possible if Apple can incorporate a fingerprint scanner under the glass, something which was too technologically challenging in 2017 but may be feasible now.

After the tremors of 2017, however, Apple may well consolidate in 2018, offering incremental upgrades and perhaps spreading existing features to more models - giving the 4. However, this was not the iPad mini 5 anticipated, and given that the iPad mini 4 was last updated in September 2015, it's clear that Apple isn't too focused on its smaller tablets and Apple does state that the most popular tablet size is 9.

Perhaps spring 2018 will see the introduction of an iPad Mini Pro with upgraded components, a new thinner, tougher aluminium chassis, and the inclusion of a Smart Connector to match that of the other iPad Pro devices. Read more: iPad mini 5 new feature rumours iOS 11 was released to the public on 19 September 2017. Like iOS 12 - and Apple's other major OS updates - watchOS 5 will first be unveiled in the summer of 2018, before a public launch in autumn.

Unlike the others, however, watchOS 5 probably won't be made available in the form of a public beta. We suspect that this may be the first watchOS update that won't be able to run on every Apple Watch model, after seeing our first-gen Apple Watch struggle with the watchOS 4 update in 2017. Following its usual pattern, Apple will reveal and demo macOS 10.

The last and least heralded of Apple's OSes, tvOS is nevertheless a Pretty Big Deal for everyone with a fourth-gen or 4K Apple TV.
